On Tuesday, February 17, 2009 National Raisin Company issued a voluntary market withdrawal notice to the Associated Press and US Food & Drug Administration for selective production codes (listed below) of Champion and other private label trail mix brands produced at National Raisin (http://www.fda.gov/opacom/7alerts.HTML). This action is related to the ongoing peanut recall issues associated with Peanut Corporation of America. Why are we recalling the product?
The oil roasted/salted peanuts used in the production codes listed below originated from the Peanut Corporation of America’s (PCA) Plainview, Texas facility. This recall is related to the PCA’s Plainview, Texas production facility’s failure to follow the guidelines established for current good manufacturing practices (21 CFR 110) outlined by the US Food & Drug Administration. On February 12th, the Texas Department of Health Services issued a mandatory recall of all products produced at the Texas facility. Although National Raisin has not received a formal recall notice from PCA Plainview, Texas or the US Food & Drug Administration, we are voluntarily recalling all products that contain oil roasted/salted peanuts from that location in the interest of consumer protection.
There have been no reported illnesses related to the consumption of any trail mix products produced by National Raisin Company. There have been no confirmed contaminants found in any oil roasted/salted peanut product shipped from PCA’s Plainview, Texas production site. Recent regulatory and media attention has been given to Salmonella contamination in peanut butter as identified at the PCA Blakely, Georgia production facility.
Salmonellosis is an infection with bacteria called Salmonella. Most persons infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most persons recover without treatment. However, in some persons, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. In these patients, the Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream, and then to other body sites and can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics. Brands affected by this recall include private label retail trail mix brands of Acme, Albertsons, Jewel, Shaw’s, Bloom, Food Lion, and Southern Grove produced by National Raisin Company. National Raisin Company’s brand of Champion trail mixes are also included in the recall.
The National Raisin Company recall is only related to the trail mix products listed below. No other Champion label products are involved. Other private label retail products produced at National Raisin Company are not involved in the voluntary market withdrawal.

National Raisin recommends that the product not be consumed and be disposed immediately. Customers may take the product back to the store of original purchase for a replacement or refund. If you have a Champion brand product, please send the empty packaging bearing one of the production codes above for a full refund to National Raisin Company, PO Box 219, Fowler, California 93625.
